MORE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

MANVERS WIND CONCERNS/KAWARTHA
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO HELP OPPOSE APPROVALS FOR THREE WIND TURBINE PROJECTS
Many of you helped oppose proposed local wind turbine projects over the past few years. Now we need to ask for help again, of several different kinds. We are facing possible approval of a first industrial wind turbine development (“Sumac Ridge Wind Farm”). Two of its five turbines would be located on the Oak Ridges Moraine. Two other projects are also proposed for our area. Your organization needs your help NOW to oppose these developments.
The government has provided two formal ways to object to any wind development in Ontario at later stages in the approval process. For us, only the Sumac Ridge Project is nearing this stage at present. First, after “posting” – or announcing – a project on a government website, the government will give us thirty days or more to put in written responses with specific objections. Then, later, if a project has been approved, we can object through official hearings.
We have to plan and organize now to use both these options to the fullest extent possible.  Both are fully legal; both entail no risk of being sued by the turbine developers. But we will need work and planning to make the best use of these approaches to try to stop the projects.
We need your help to assist with many tasks that can contribute to stopping the first turbine development – and the other two proposals if they come this far.  We plan to break down the work involved so that volunteer tasks can be shared out. We want to make them fit your skills and availability so that no one shoulders too great a part of the effort.
There will be work in the following areas as well as in others, depending on your interests and skill-sets:
–          communicating by email or phone to keep local families up to date;
–          using email or direct help for families to respond to government online “postings” of the projects;
–          helping organize community responses if wind turbine developers call public meetings on further projects;
–          helping with research and analysis on the developers’ proposals;
–          direct fundraising for government tribunal hearings on each turbine project.
Note that we will be taking the direct fundraising approach rather than planning social events. These events are time consuming and require an immense amount of effort. We need to focus on preparing for possible appeals at this time so we will be asking you to contribute directly.
Please do the following now:
–          fill out the form over the page and email or mail it back – give us contact information, even if you can’t help at present and want just to be kept informed;
–          pass copies of this form on to concerned friends or neighbours and get them to fill it out too;
–          if you are in a position to do so, please plan to contribute financially when requested. We need a lot but all contributions will be welcome. Receipts will be issued and all proceeds will go towards these efforts.
